Jagame Thandhiram is a Tamil Action-Drama directed by Karthik Subburaj. It was scheduled to release in May 2020 but due to Covid Pandemic and Lockdown situation, it is finally released today on Netflix. Danush was not happy with the idea of OTT release as he wants his fans to witness this Gangster Saga on the big screen. However, later he realises that joining hands with big streamers like Netflix will have special benefits. Undoubtedly, this film is one of the biggest OTT releases in recent times. It was released in 190 Countries with 12 Foreign languages and 5 Indian languages.
Danush name has become a new brand in the Indian Cinema. His films are now getting Pan India recognition and it is gaining commercial success even in abroad releases. He plays a powerful role called "Surali" - A local gangster hail from Madurai. This film traces his gangster journey from Madurai to London. The special thing about Danush is whenever he plays a local boy character, he gives a new shade for the role and provides a relishing viewing experience for the audience
Santosh Narayanan always delivers something special when he collaborates with Karthik Subburaj. All the songs are already top of the chart. Bujju song was removed to reduce the length of the film. As usual, SN showed his class with his brilliant background scores. He had shown the subtle variation in the score when the story moves from Madurai to London. Also, he had used techno music for build-ups and mass element scenes which blends well with the visuals.
DOP- Shreyas Krishna's contribution behind the camera lenses is extraordinary and engaging. Cinematography is top-notch. Be it Madurai or London, his unique style of shot-making is a visual delight for the audience. The dark red tone was maintained for James Cosmos ( Peter) portion in the film to bring out the true essence of Gangster's Lifestyle!
The first 40 mins of the film are quite interesting and engaging but as the movie progress and moves to London, it completely look off-track and lost its momentum. There are so many characters in this film which seem to be 'force-fit' to the script. For instance, Gajaraj ( Karthik Subburaj Father) plays a little cameo without adding any value to the script. Also, regular actors from Jigarthanda are forcefully fit into the screenplay without any significance. Aishwarya Lekshmi acted well but completely look off-track with poor lip-sync!. Prime actors like Joju George and Kalaiarasan are wasted and sidelined.
The second half of the film looks messy and less engaging. Director suddenly shifts gear and move into Eelam Tamil issues which are completely alienated from the script. Global politics on the immigrants and the Gyan sessions about the US and UK supremacy are giving only documentary effect! Technically, the film is well made but it lacks depth in the story and screenplay. Karthik Subburaj needs to take a reality check and reinvent the wheel. We want films like Pizza and Jigarthanda from his team which adopted a new way of storytelling.
Overall, Jagame Thanthiram is just another average action film. You can certainly try this movie for the Visuals, Music, and Dhanush but it will not give the satisfaction of watching the good old Karthik Subburaj film! -๐๐ซ.๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐ค
